Big four grocer Asda is introducing young people to what retail jobs have to offer.

The supermarket giant announced today (March 10th) that it will be rolling out a new programme this May, which will provide up to 15,000 work experience placements for 14 to 16-year-olds and the same number of apprenticeship opportunities for existing staff members.

As part of the young retailer programme, all new starters at Asda will receive City & Guilds accredited training too.

Every single one of Asda’s 371 stores in the UK will form an alliance with a school or college in order for the work experience scheme to function.

This comes after it was recently revealed the supermarket will need to recruit 22,000 people into retail jobs and other roles to fill vacancies this year, while there will also be 6,000 new job opportunities created via the firm’s 2010 store opening programme.

Speaking last month, Chief Executive Officer Andy Bond reflected on favourable financial results by saying: “We have improved every aspect of the business, for our customers, for our colleagues and for our shareholder.

“Through our superior operating model, we have also outperformed the market for the last 15 quarters.”
