The cold weather and post-Christmas slump have prompted a number of negative headlines for the retail industry in recent weeks, but the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker shows February was actually a good month for the sector.
Overall like-for-like sales were up by 9.1 per cent on last year, while Brits showed they are dedicated followers of fashion as clothing and footwear sales went through the roof.
Like-for-like sales in this sector were up by 10.7 per cent on February 2009 - a record year-on-year increase. Demand for winter clothing was one of the key drivers, showing that the freezing weather conditions were welcome by some people in the UK.
Sales through non-store channels such as the internet grew by 46.1 per cent, which highlights the importance of multichannel retailing in this day and age.
Head of Retail at BDO Don Williams commented: “These encouraging results show that the supposed “big fall” is not manifesting itself on the high street.
“Retailers, particularly in the fashion market, have done well not to scare their customers off by not taking risks with their ranges and picking items that people really want to buy.”
