Hawes & Curtis

Hawes & Curtis

Hawes & Curtis was established by Mr Ralph Hawes and Mr Freddie Curtis in 1913. Not only did Hawes and Curtis' skill and taste define their distinguished clothes but it was their customers that established the brand and image over the next century.

They opened a shop in London and after nine years in business, HRH Prince of Wales placed an order for lounge suits, blazers, flannels, linen shirts and handkerchiefs with Hawes & Curtis. Thrilled with the quality of his new clothes, the Prince was so pleased with Hawes & Curtis' garments that he recommended our brand and clothes to his cousin, the later Earl Mountbatten and Viceroy of India. By the strength of a Royal warrant and aristocratic recommendations, the Hawes and Curtis brand grew to define and embody Gentlemen's style and taste during a century.

This Prince of Wales famously abdicated the British throne and rejected being the King of the British Empire for his love of Mrs Simpson, an American divorcee. King Edward VIII became the Duke of Windsor. He and Mrs Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor developed into the style icons of their time and the Duke provided invaluable promotion for the Hawes & Curtis' brand.

In gratitude for the Duke's custom and warrant, Hawes & Curtis created the famous spread collar to fit

the unstructured tie for The Duke of Windsor - one of this century's most stylish and powerful men. This bespoke tie had a thicker inner lining in the part of the tie that formed the knot, which complemented Hawes & Curtis' Collar. This tie knot was later named the ‘Windsor Knot'

Hawes & Curtis created additional innovations and were the creators of the backless waistcoat, which was worn under a tailcoat and was renowned for its comfort.

Welcome to FredAstaire.Net

So taken with the Duke's waistcoat was Fred Astaire, the movie star, that he immediately travelled to Hawes & Curtis in West London to order one. He was politely and regretfully refused due to the high demand from the British elite.

The care and attention to detail that Hawes & Curtis undertook went beyond simply manufacturing new clothes. The pair also laundered and repaired the Duke's favourite shirts, ties and waistcoats to return them in a mint condition. This personal attention to detail and service follows the brand today.
